Ceramic coatings don't fail all at once — they degrade gradually, which means most owners don't notice until the protection is already significantly diminished. Here's what to actually watch for.
A fresh coating makes water bead into tight, marble-like droplets that roll off at the slightest angle. As the coating wears, beads flatten out and start sheeting instead of beading — a clear sign the hydrophobic layer is thinning.
Bugs, bird droppings, and road grime should wipe off a coated surface with minimal effort. If you're noticing things bonding on and requiring real scrubbing to remove, the coating's slick surface property is degrading.
This is the one most owners catch first, especially on darker colors. A healthy coating has a deep, wet-look gloss. As it wears, that reflection starts looking duller and flatter, even after a wash.
Lubbock's hard water leaves mineral deposits on any surface it dries on. A working coating sheets water fast enough that spots rarely have time to etch. If you're seeing water spots that don't wash off easily, the coating isn't repelling water the way it should anymore.
Even a coating that's technically still "working" benefits from a periodic SiO₂ topper to refresh the surface. If it's been a while, a maintenance visit is worth scheduling before you notice actual degradation.
A maintenance topper is far cheaper than a full recoat — catching the early signs above and scheduling a refresh keeps you from needing a full paint correction and recoat down the line.
