What West Texas specifically does to a truck

Three things stack up here. Caliche dust acts as a fine abrasive every time the wind blows. Hard water from the Ogallala Aquifer etches the clear coat when it evaporates on hot panels. And 300+ days of sun a year breaks the clear coat down from above.

The visible result is usually the same: a hood and roof noticeably duller than the doors. That's UV plus airborne abrasion doing their work on the horizontal surfaces first.

Corrected clear coat with no protection oxidizes on the same schedule it did before. On a work truck we'd generally recommend coating it after correction — the labor is the expensive part, and protection is what makes it last.
