What actually causes it

Rail dust is airborne metal particulate — from rail lines, grain elevators, welding operations, and industrial sites — that lands hot and embeds into clear coat. Each particle then rusts in place, which is why the specks appear orange and why they keep growing.

Why it is worse in West Texas

Lubbock has active rail lines, grain handling, and cotton gin operations, plus constant wind to carry particulate. White and silver vehicles show it first because the orange specks contrast.

How it gets removed

  1. Diagnose it correctly. Feel the paint through a plastic bag — fallout gives a rough, sandpapery texture.
  2. Look closely at the specks. Fallout is orange dots sitting proud of the surface, not rust bubbling from underneath.
  3. Apply iron remover across the panel and let it react.
  4. Rinse before it dries, then clay bar the entire panel.
  5. Assess for pitting once the paint is smooth again.
  6. Polish any remaining craters or dullness.
  7. Seal or coat, since bare decontaminated paint re-contaminates quickly.

The mistake that makes it permanent

Left untreated, each embedded particle rusts and expands until it has pitted through the clear coat. At that stage polishing cannot recover it. Fallout is fully reversible early and permanent late.

What it costs

Iron decontamination is included in Full Reset & Protect (from $350). If pitting remains, correction starts at $350.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the little orange specks on my white car?

Almost always industrial fallout or rail dust — airborne metal particles that embedded in the clear coat and are now rusting in place. It is not rust coming from within the paint, and it is removable with iron decontamination.

How do I know if my paint has industrial fallout?

Put your hand in a plastic bag and glide it over the paint after washing. Fallout feels rough and gritty rather than smooth. On light-colored paint you will also see small orange dots sitting on the surface.

Can rail dust be removed?

Yes, with a chemical iron remover followed by clay bar decontamination. If the particles have been embedded long enough to pit the clear coat, machine polishing is also needed to remove the craters.

Does rail dust cause permanent damage?

Only if ignored. Each particle rusts and expands over time until it pits through the clear coat. Caught early, decontamination fully reverses it with no lasting damage.
