Battery electrolyte is sulfuric acid. On paint it burns through clear coat and keeps reacting as long as any acid remains. Water dilutes it but does not stop the reaction, which is why damage often continues after a rinse.
Heat accelerates the reaction considerably, and Lubbock summer heat is also what kills batteries and causes the venting and leaking in the first place.
Rinsing with water alone dilutes acid but leaves it active, and it can run it into seams and down onto areas that were not affected. Neutralize with baking soda first, then rinse.
Correction is quoted after the area is neutralized and assessed. Light etching from $250, deeper damage may need body shop refinishing.
