Paint decontamination is the process of removing this bonded contamination, and it's a foundational step in every detail we perform at Delicate Details in Lubbock TX.
Washing removes loose, surface-level dirt — dust, mud, bird droppings sitting on top of the paint. Decontamination removes contamination that has chemically or physically bonded to the clear coat surface and cannot be flushed or wiped away. These are two different problems requiring two different solutions. A vehicle can be freshly washed and still be heavily contaminated — the two states are not mutually exclusive.
Every detail at Delicate Details includes decontamination as a required step, not an optional add-on. Applying any coating, sealant, or wax over contaminated paint seals the contamination in and creates adhesion problems. Decon comes first, always.
Iron fallout remover is a spray-on product containing a reducing agent that reacts chemically with ferrous (iron-based) particles embedded in the paint. The visual indicator is dramatic: the product turns purple on contact with iron as it dissolves the particles from the surface. You spray it on a washed, wet panel, let it dwell for a few minutes, and watch it react. The iron particles — from brake dust, rail dust, and industrial fallout — are solubilized and rinsed away.
In Lubbock TX, iron fallout is significant. Every vehicle driving with disc brakes is constantly generating iron particles that become airborne and bond to paint. You fold the clay periodically to expose a fresh face, and when the clay face is gray with contamination, you know what wasn't coming off with soap.
After clay bar, run the plastic-bag test again. The glass-smooth surface you feel is what clean paint actually feels like. Most vehicle owners have never felt it — because most washes don't include decontamination.
