A pressure washer is genuinely useful on a car — it is how you get caliche off without touching the paint. It is also one of the few tools in a home garage capable of doing damage that requires a body shop to undo.
People fixate on the PSI number, but distance does the same job. A moderate washer held two inches from a panel delivers far more force than a powerful one held two feet back. Roughly 1200–1900 PSI at about a foot of distance is a sensible working range for paint. If you are close enough to see the water digging, you are too close.
The red zero-degree nozzle concentrates the entire output into a pencil-width jet. It will cut into clear coat, lift paint at a chip edge, and shred a tire sidewall marking. It has no use anywhere on a vehicle. A 40-degree white or 25-degree green tip is what belongs on a car.
Intact paint tolerates a lot. Paint with an existing chip, a lifting edge, or a previous respray does not — pressure gets underneath and peels. The same applies to badges, emblems and any trim held on with adhesive. If a panel has been repainted, treat it as fragile and keep well back.
Directing a jet at door seals, window weatherstripping, or the cowl below the windshield can force water past barriers designed for rain, not pressure. That is how you end up with damp carpet with no obvious source. Never aim into a seam or a seal — spray along panels, not into gaps.
None of this means avoid one. A pressure rinse is the correct way to remove abrasive caliche dust before anything touches the paint, and skipping that step is what causes most swirl marks in this climate. Correct order — thorough pressure rinse first, contact second — prevents more damage than the washer could ever cause.
