Your First Detail:
What Actually Happens

By Delicate Details August 2026 5 min read
What to expect at your first professional car detail in Lubbock TX

Most people's only reference point for cleaning a car is a tunnel wash or doing it themselves in the driveway. A real detail is a different thing entirely, and if you've never booked one it's reasonable to not know what you're paying for. Here's the honest version.

Before You Come In

Take your stuff out — glovebox, center console, trunk, car seats if you can. We'll work around belongings if we have to, but anything left in the vehicle is something we can't clean under. You don't need to wash it first. Bringing it dirty is the entire point; that's the job.

What Happens First: Decontamination

Every vehicle starts with a proper wash and decontamination, regardless of which package you booked. That means a foam pre-wash, a hand wash, and a clay bar pass to pull out embedded contamination the wash left behind — caliche, rail dust, industrial fallout. Everything after this step depends on the paint actually being clean, which is why it isn't optional.

How Long It Takes

An Essential Detail is roughly three hours. Full Reset & Protect runs five to seven. The Premium Detail is usually a full day because of the machine polishing step. Ceramic coating is multiple days — decontamination, correction, application, and cure each need their own time. Plan on dropping it off in the morning.

What You'll Actually Notice Afterward

The two things people comment on are how the glass looks and how the interior smells. Paint gloss is the obvious one, but clean glass with no film changes night driving more than most people expect. If your car had an odor, that usually traces to the carpet and seats, which is a different service than a wipe-down.

What we won't do: tell you that you need the expensive package when you don't. If the paint is in good shape, an Essential Detail is the right call and we'll say so. If it genuinely needs correction, we'll show you under proper lighting rather than asking you to take our word for it.

If you're not sure which level your vehicle needs, that's normal and it isn't something you're expected to diagnose yourself. Bring it by, we'll look at it, and you'll get a straight answer.

We'll inspect your paint and tell you exactly what it needs — most clients are booked within 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to clean my car before a detail?

No. Bring it however it is — that's the job. The only thing worth doing is taking out personal belongings, because anything left in the vehicle is something we can't clean underneath.

How long does a first detail take?

Essential Detail is about three hours, Full Reset & Protect is five to seven, and the Premium Detail is usually a full day because of the machine polish step. Ceramic coating runs multiple days.

What does a first detail cost in Lubbock?

Essential Detail starts at $195 for a sedan, $220 mid-size, and $240 for a truck or SUV. Full Reset & Protect starts at $350 and Premium Detail at $695, both priced up by vehicle size.

Which package should I book if I've never done this?

For a vehicle that's been reasonably maintained, start with the Essential Detail. If the paint has lost gloss or the interior needs real work, Full Reset & Protect is the more honest fit. We'll tell you which one it actually needs when we see it.

Do you clean the engine bay too?

That's a separate service rather than part of the standard packages. If you want it included, mention it when you book so we can allow time for it.
